Migraines - More Than Just a Headache

Green Iowa Clinic

Migraines are a debilitating chronic pain that can negatively impact a person’s quality of life.  This chronic, severe headache pain can cause patients to be unable to function, miss out on important parts of life, and even spend unnecessary time seeking healthcare solutions.

Migraines can not only cause pain, but can as well cause nausea, vomiting, light hypersensitivity, noise hypersensitivity, malaise, confusion, altered mental status, and other incapacitating symptoms.

This chronic pain condition is difficult to control and difficult to resolve once they have begun.  Many patients who suffer from migraines have tried the normal medications, such as Sumatriptan, anti-nausea medications, and a variety of opioid medications with little relief.  As such, many have turned to alternative therapies to help ease their migraine pain.

Cannabis has been demonstrated to help relieve many types of chronic pain, including migraine pain.  Cannabis has effects on the body’s endocannabinoid system, helping regulate pain, decrease inflammation, and alleviate nausea issues.  This therapy has been demonstrated, both in research and anecdotally, to improve the lives of those who suffer from migraines.  It allows these individuals to live a higher quality of life and play a more active role in their daily activities.

In Iowa, any form of chronic pain is a qualifying condition for a medical cannabis card.  As such, those who suffer with migraines qualify for a card and can begin their progress to improving their lives.
